PATRICK MARVIN CHASTAIN - GLORIA MURIEL MILLER

A5. PATRICK MARVIN CHASTAIN, born 24 May 1925 in Thomasville, Georgia. He was baptized on 13 December 1963 and confirmed in faith April 1964, both at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Thomasville.

Pat attended East Side School and Thomasville High School, then joined the U.S. Navy where he received his high school diploma. Pat was in the Navy from 17 March 1943 to 4 March 1947 aboard the USS Fitch destroyer as a second class petty officer mail man.

In the Navy, he earned the Good Conduct Medal and battlestars for participation in Invasions of Normandy, Northern France and Okinawa.

In 1951, Pat began working on the Railroad in Thomasville and is still employed there as a switchman.
He has been Local Chairman for the Brotherhood of Local Trainmen from 1954 to present. He was elected five times by fellow employees as a representative to the National BRT Convention.
Pat believes that it is nice to be important, but it is more important to be nice. He enjoys fishing, reading, and being with his family.

m. Gloria Muriel Miller on 4 May 1946 in Thomasville, Georgia. Gloria was born 1 August 1927 in Altoona, Pennsylvania to Frank Raymond Miller and Catherine Judd. She attended schools in Altoona and received her high school diploma in Thomasville through the vocational school around 1973.

She was baptized in 1927 at the Catholic Church in Altoona. She received her licensed practical nursing degree from Thomas County Vocational School in 1974 and began private duty nursing.

She was received in Confirmation at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Thomasville in April 1963.

Pat and Gloria divorced in January 1979, Thomasville, Georgia. Pat was elected at the International UTU convention to the Executive Board in 1979.

Miller-Chastain

A very impressive but simple home wedding was that of Miss Gloria Miller and Pat Chastain at high noon, Saturday. Rev. Sed of Dawson Street Baptist C hurch officiating with just the family and a few close friends attending.

They were married at the home of the groom's mother, Mrs. L. C. Chastain, Sr. on Reid Street. The living room was beautifully decorated with white gladiolas, larkspur and southern amflax.

The bride was lovely in a fuschia suit with white accessories. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond R. Miller of Altoona, PA., and was gradated from the Altoona High School.

The groom was a Thomasville High School student before entering the Navy in 1943.

Updated Information:

August 11, 1989, Pat Chastain died of prostate cancer. He was buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Thomasville, however someone took removed his remains. His spirit is still in Laurel Hill Cemetery, where his son and daughter-in-law, Pat and Ree, have placed a memorial marker for him so he is near family.

Baptized in December 1947 at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Thomasville, and confirmed at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Thomasville 13 December 1963. Karyl attended Jerger School and graduated from Thomasville High School in 1965. She received a B.S. in Education (Secondary. French) from Georgia Southern College in June 1969, a minor in Elementary Education from Georgia State University in 1971. and Master's degree in Education: Elementary and Middle grades from Valdosta State College in June 1979.

She taught in public schools for seven years , also has done volunteer work in Atlanta both disadvantaged children, and in Alabama with cerebral palsied children .

Her favorite authors are Mark Twain and Emra Bombeck; her most admired people, Eleanor Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, her hobbies, reading and cooking, and her favorite quotations: "A teacher affects eternity: she can never tell where her influence will end."

m. Ronald Lee Beal on 21 November 1970 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Thomasville, Georgia. Ronnie was born 14 January 1947 in Jacksonville, Alabama to Ottie Lee Knighten and Horace Davis Beal. He was baptized on 18 December 1957 at Westside Baptist Church in Jacksonville, and confirmed at St. Jude's Episcopal Church in Smyrna, Georgia in December 1974. He graduated from Jacksonville High school (Ala.) in June 1965, and was in the U.S. Marines for three years. He is presently a prison corrections officer for the State of Georgia.

Pat attended Jerger School and Thomasville High School, then Rabun Gap Nacoochee High School in Rabun Gap, Georgia where he graduated in June 1967. He attended Georgia Southern College, then started work for Southern Bell in Atlanta, Georgia. Pat was in the US Army for three years, serving in Viet Nam, earning five medals and being honorably discharged at the rank of sargeant with offer of a direct commission. For about twelve years, Pat has been employed with the telephone company in Atlanta.

Pat, with his wife Pixie and their two daughters have undertaken a small business project together. They make fan lamps that are sold commercially. Pat enjoys coin collecting as well as competitive games and sports. His favorite quotation is, "I shall pass through this world but once. Any good thing, therefore, that I can do or any kindness that I can show to man or beast, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it for I shall not pass this way again."
